Reviews for the Amazon Fire HD 8 2024

I would recommend the Fire HD 8 even for $100, but if you’re paying full price for an Amazon tablet, you’re doing it wrong. Take advantage of Black Friday and Prime Day sales to get the Fire HD 8 for less. It’s consistently on our list of best budget tablets for a reason, and while the Fire HD 8 (2024) might not dazzle in any particular category, it does well enough to justify a purchase. So, if you're buying one for the first time, or like many of us, coming back for your third or fourth Fire tablet, you won't be disappointed by the Fire HD 8 (2024).

Outside of that, the unit offers nothing different from its predecessor. It’s still a flat black cookie-cutter big-bezel reflective tablet with the same plastic composition as every other unit before, except with a slightly different perforated plateresque appearance on the back, even though it’s just plastic. Alexa integrated a few generations ago, and this one also utilizes it. However, outside of that, the company’s business is as usual. For now, the new AI features feel like gimmicks instead of game-changers. The biggest draw for this unit, and this is a big one… Is that this is about 50 bucks to buy into this with ads But with that, it is a good tablet. Getting into something so economically cheap that boasts such impressive specs is not terrible; we wish they did something fun and fresh to revive the brand a little bit, but it seems it’s business as usual.

The frustrating thing is that there isn’t any serious competition for tablets at this price – and Amazon knows it. So despite the lack of worthwhile advancements in the hardware and the belligerently backwards software, the Amazon Fire HD 8 (2024) is the best tablet you can get for £100 – by simple virtue of there being no other serious options. I’d always recommend considering whether you can push your budget a little higher – both the Honor Pad 8 and Oppo Pad Air have bigger displays, better performance and more accessible software, and can currently be picked up for £150 and £149, respectively. If £100 is your absolute limit though, the Amazon Fire HD 8 (2024) is just about your only option. It’s a shame that you can’t buy the 2022 model anymore, as I think that’s still marginally better, but at least the Fire HD 8 (2024) hasn’t had its price increased.

The 2024 Amazon Fire HD 8 might be new, but it shares many of the same features and shortcomings as its predecessor (not to mention other Fire tablets). For only $100, it's small, fast enough to handle basic apps, and has enough battery life to make it through a long trip. But its screen and speakers are only so-so. For $40 more, the Fire HD 10 has a bigger, sharper display, more power, and even better battery life, so it remains our Editor’s Choice winner.

This display format is in the mid-range for smartphones. It offers a compromise between good visibility, details and resolution on the screen, and you can still fit it into trouser pockets.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.Amazon: Amazon is a company that is mainly known as an online retailer, but it also has its own product line called AmazonBasics. This product line includes a wide variety of products, including electronics, housewares, office supplies, sports and leisure items, and more. Amazon also works with other manufacturers to offer products under the "Amazon's Choice" brand, which are recommended by Amazon based on their reviews and popularity.
73.4%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
