Affordable sim racing gear arrives including new wheelbase, steering wheel, pedals, and cockpit from Asetek

Sim racing is undoubtedly quite an exciting space, and has skyrocketed in popularity in recent years. Brands such as Simagic, Moza, and Fanatec are well-known names in this arena, and now Asetek seemingly also wants a piece of the entry-level pie with their freshly introduced sim racing gear line, dubbed Initium.

Primarily targeted at beginner sim racers on the hunt for entry level sim racing gear, the Initium product line features a wheelbase, steering wheel, pedal set, as well as a cockpit. A bundle is also on offer, starting at just $599 for the wheelbase, wheel, and pedals. For another $450, the Initium racing cockpit can also be included in the bundle. Interestingly, the Moza Racing R5 bundle, which also boasts a 5.5 nm wheelbase with a smaller 280 mm wheel, is around $160 cheaper.

Steering wheel and wheelbase

The Initium wheelbase boasts direct-drive technology with a peak torque of 5.5 nm, which is a pretty decent number for beginners. Compared to cheaper belt-driven bases, direct drive sets offer smoother and quieter operation. Those interested in further increasing the power output down the line, can utilize the boost kit to increase the output to 8 nm, which is pretty close to a real GT3 car.

The Initium wheel on the other hand, sports a 300 mm plastic wheel with perforated grips for long-term comfort. A total of 21 inputs are available, including dual magnetic paddles. A rev indicator is also present. Of course, the feel and quality of the product cannot be established without independent testing, but it sure does look good on paper.

Brake and throttle pedal set

Last but not least, the Initium pedal set completes the sim setup. Made from glassfibre reinforced composite materials, the pedal set boasts hall-sensors, which is typical for its price class. As with the other equipment, the real-world performance and feel of the pedals, especially the brake pedal, can only be confirmed after thorough testing.

The Initium product range, as mentioned previously, also features a 2-in-1 cockpit, which is claimed to have an ultra-rigid steel construction. Of course, the 5 nm wheelbase can be attached to desks, but mounting the hardware to a purpose-built sim rig is always preferred, especially if customers consider upgrading their Initium wheelbase to 8 nm. Being a 2-in-1 cockpit, the product is well-suited for both GT as well as Formula racing.
