On the matter of this going against the ROG Mothership given the rather similar specifications and me reviewing both devices, I personally prefer the Helios 700 for one simple reason. While the Mothership may have performed better with overall lower running temperature, the Helios 700 is closely behind with just one power brick. The Mothership uses two.

We’ll get this out of way first, because everyone wants to know about the “value” word. There is none. While the $3,999 price for the specs above is on a par with comparable laptops from the competition, this is no blue-plate special. However, if you’re looking for a no-compromise gaming laptop, take a hard look at the Acer Predator Helios 700. Sure, it loses some contests to the desktop-CPU-equipped Alienware Area 51m R1, but it’s as fast and sometimes faster in others.

Acer Predator Helios 700 is one of the greatest gaming devices we’ve ever tested. It is interesting to see the HyperDrift technology actually works. Not only works, but it does also help the Helios 700 perform on a similar level as a desktop RTX 2080-equipped machine. It makes it extra intriguing to see it compared against other behemoths that we shall review. Perhaps it is safe to say that this laptop is truly capable of delivering 4K/ultra settings gaming.

The Acer Predator Helios 700 promises to be one of the most powerful gaming laptops around, plus its unique HyperDrift keyboard is a really smart solution for keeping components cool. Anyone looking for a proper portable gaming laptop should look elsewhere though, with its 4.5kg heft proving restrictive.

The Helios 700 will be competing with the likes of the Alienware Area-51m, MSI GT75 Titan, and HP's Omen X gaming laptops. We'll be sure to put it through our full series of tests when it launches here, so stay tuned for that.

With very limited time actually playing games on the Predator Helios 700, it’s difficult to talk confidently about anything other than its swanky HyperDrift keyboard, and that’s easily what will mark it out from the rest of the gaming laptops we see this year. It works as well as you’d hope and seems genuinely useful. The MagForce keys are also an interesting addition.

With it's high price tag and bonkers design, the Helios 700 isn't for everyone but it's an interesting addition to the Predator range.

The Acer Predator Helios 700 brings long-overdue innovations to the desktop replacement gaming laptop that actually seem practical and functional, driving both stronger performance and more gaming creature comforts.

Overall the Acer Predator Helios 700 is a gaming beast with a lot of clever features up its sleeve. The sliding keyboard is great fun and practical for optimum cooling during gaming sessions, while the MagTouch depth-sensitive keys add yet another unique sales point.

Speaking of speed, the Helios 700 is the zippiest we've tested with the exception of i9-9900K-based models; no surprise given that the laptop H series processors have a lower power envelope than their desktop analogs. (At its maximum overclocking in the Helios, the processor draws about 107 watts.) But you don't really gain much by running in Extreme mode for gaming -- the biggest boost seems to be on RTX ray tracing (as measured by 3DMark Port Royal), and that's only about 10%. You do have the option of using different overclocking settings for the CPU and GPU.

The Acer Predator Helios 700 is a straight-up beast when it comes to performance. To top it off, this machine has a great cooling system and boasts a comfortable keyboard, all wrapped in an innovative design. Despite all that, the display and audio don't live up to gaming laptop standards.

If you do happen to slot right into the Helios’ narrow niche, you’ll get excellent performance. It’s incredibly powerful. But even in that scenario, the noise levels might spoil your fun. If at all possible, try before you buy or at least ensure you have the option of returning for a full refund. It’s a subjective call, but this rig makes a massive din and we’re confident it will be a deal breaker for some. We’re glad the Acer Predator Helios 700 exists. It’s interesting. It’s innovative. And it’s very, very fast. It’s also very compromised. Thus, it’s not a laptop we can recommend without major caveats. But if you’ve processed this portable’s peccadilloes and think it might still suit your needs, it deserves a spot on your shortlist. There’s little else quite like it.

The main caveat is the serious impact to portability, while the lack of built-in 4K visuals and crazy-loud fans are also sore points. If that doesn’t put you off and you’ve got enough bank spare, then this Predator certainly has an incredible amount of bite.

The Acer Predator Helios 700 is the most powerful gaming laptop we’ve tested so far. However, it’s also very heavy, stretching the definition of the term "portable", and VERY loud, not to mention expensive. It's ideal for those new to overclocking and PC gaming, who perhaps don’t want to get into modding and tweaking just yet.

The brand-new Acer Predator Helios 700 is definitely one of the most exciting gaming notebooks of 2019. The positioning of its keyboard and touchpad can be changed thanks to a sliding mechanism, which gives the 17-inch device access to a lot of fresh air to cool its high-end hardware. Find out whether this idea actually works in our review.

Larger than most notebooks of its 17.3-inch screen size, the Helios 700 makes the most of it by providing an expansive, well laid-out keyboard (which slides out in unique fashion; more on that in a moment), dedicated gaming macro keys, quiet cooling fans, and a good sound system.

It's also big, heavy, and doesn't get great battery life, but that's the cost of having this much power. Games look and play great, with real-time ray tracing and DLSS coming from Nvidia's RTX GPUs, the high refresh rate, and the power of overclocking already powerful internals.

If you're in love with the concept and have money to burn, you'll get the promised performance, but there are much better design innovation and values out there. We think the Alienware m15 R4 offers the most performance per dollar, the Asus Zephyrus Duo 15 is a more appealing (while similarly speedy) experimental design, and the Alienware m17 R3 is a more practical RTX 20 Series solution.
