On the matter of this going against the ROG Mothership given the rather similar specifications and me reviewing both devices, I personally prefer the Helios 700 for one simple reason. While the Mothership may have performed better with overall lower running temperature, the Helios 700 is closely behind with just one power brick. The Mothership uses two.

We’ll get this out of way first, because everyone wants to know about the “value” word. There is none. While the $3,999 price for the specs above is on a par with comparable laptops from the competition, this is no blue-plate special. However, if you’re looking for a no-compromise gaming laptop, take a hard look at the Acer Predator Helios 700. Sure, it loses some contests to the desktop-CPU-equipped Alienware Area 51m R1, but it’s as fast and sometimes faster in others.

Acer Predator Helios 700 is one of the greatest gaming devices we’ve ever tested. It is interesting to see the HyperDrift technology actually works. Not only works, but it does also help the Helios 700 perform on a similar level as a desktop RTX 2080-equipped machine. It makes it extra intriguing to see it compared against other behemoths that we shall review. Perhaps it is safe to say that this laptop is truly capable of delivering 4K/ultra settings gaming.

The Acer Predator Helios 700 promises to be one of the most powerful gaming laptops around, plus its unique HyperDrift keyboard is a really smart solution for keeping components cool. Anyone looking for a proper portable gaming laptop should look elsewhere though, with its 4.5kg heft proving restrictive.

The Helios 700 will be competing with the likes of the Alienware Area-51m, MSI GT75 Titan, and HP's Omen X gaming laptops. We'll be sure to put it through our full series of tests when it launches here, so stay tuned for that.

With very limited time actually playing games on the Predator Helios 700, it’s difficult to talk confidently about anything other than its swanky HyperDrift keyboard, and that’s easily what will mark it out from the rest of the gaming laptops we see this year. It works as well as you’d hope and seems genuinely useful. The MagForce keys are also an interesting addition.

With it's high price tag and bonkers design, the Helios 700 isn't for everyone but it's an interesting addition to the Predator range.

Overall the Acer Predator Helios 700 is a gaming beast with a lot of clever features up its sleeve. The sliding keyboard is great fun and practical for optimum cooling during gaming sessions, while the MagTouch depth-sensitive keys add yet another unique sales point.
