AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS and Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 power Acer's gaming laptop. They are joined by a bright, 16:10 aspect ratio, 16-inch display (WQXGA, 165 Hz, G-Sync), a USB-4 port and very good battery life. The results are impressive. Find out more in our extensive review.

A Ryzen 5 7535HS, GeForce RTX 4050, USB 4, and a bright 16:10 display (16-inch, WUXGA, 165 Hz, G-Sync) are the highlights of the relatively inexpensive (€1,250) Nitro 16. Under the right conditions, the already very good battery run times of the predecessor further surpassed. This review evaluates the performance and other characteristics of this alternate configuration.

On the whole, the Nitro 16 is a well-rounded budget gaming laptop with strong performance from its full-power RTX 4050 GPU, a solid if all-plastic chassis and big and bright display. It can frequently be found at a discount of $900 where it's a great buy, delivering outstanding bang for your budget gaming buck. If Acer's similar but slightly better Predator Helios Neo 16 can also be found on sale for less than $1,000, however, then it gets our recommendation as the best budget gaming laptop you can buy right now.

The Acer Nitro 16 AMD is not the prettiest gaming laptop out there – it’s a bit bulky as well – but it delivers competent performance even with a 165Hz refresh rate. It’s also on the affordable side of the gaming laptop spectrum. You won’t be wowed by the webcam or battery life, but the overall package will deliver, especially for competitive gamers.

The gaming performance and bright, crisp 1200p display make the Acer Nitro 16 a surprisingly capable gaming laptop, especially considering its relatively low price of $1,200. Budget gaming laptops are an exercise in tradeoffs, and many manufacturers make cuts in the wrong areas, but Acer doesn’t here. The Nitro 16 doesn’t chase pure performance, falling back on an RTX 4050 instead of an RTX 4060, but its display and battery are ahead of options like the MSI Katana 15. The 16:10 display is perfect for editing photos or documents in addition to gaming. The areas where the laptop does falter are easier to deal with than some alternatives, like the Acer Nitro 16’s sound. It’s not terrible, but it’s not particularly impactful. If you’re using the laptop for gaming, however, you may want to use a gaming headset anyway, in which case the relatively weak speakers don’t matter as much. This is true of the pre-installed software as well: once you’ve gone through the trouble of uninstalling it, you don’t have to worry about it anymore.

The Acer Nitro 16 (AN16-51) is a real gem for people who don’t want to spend too much money on a gaming laptop. It has a stable base, and a comfortable backlit keyboard alongside an accurate touchpad. The design is typical for a gaming device with aggressive lines and “Lamborghini-like exhausts” on the back. The 16″ IPS display with G-Sync support is a rare find in this price segment. It has a 1600p resolution and 96% sRGB color coverage. Thanks to our “Gaming and Web design” profile, the color accuracy reaches an average dE value of just 1.0 which is awesome! This makes the display suitable for content creation and color-sensitive work. The panel is also PWM-free so you can use it for long hours of work but as always, you have to take short breaks from time to time. The performance of the laptop is very good. The thirsty Core i7-13700H is well-cooled and can maintain high frequencies and power limits.

The Nitro 16 is a bit of a conundrum. There are a lot of good-budget gaming laptops at the £1000 to £1500 price point, some packing the faster RTX 4060 GPU. We’ve yet to look at the Asus ROG Strix G16 or the MSI Cyborg 15, but both come with the aforementioned NVIDIA chip and promise great 1080p gaming at a slightly lower price point. We’ve just looked at the Gigabyte G5 (2023), which manages the same trick at under £1000. The Nitro 16 brings you a faster CPU, double the 16GB of RAM and that 16-inch, QHD+ screen, but without a GPU capable of powering it, you might be wondering: what’s the point? Personally, I’d be willing to pay the extra for the additional CPU horsepower and RAM, and for the advantages the screen brings when you’re watching 4K video, playing less demanding games or simply trying to get some work done.

I really enjoyed our time using the 2023 Acer Nitro 16, and I’ve been impressed with everything it can do. Not to mention this isn’t Acer’s top-spec, more powerful Predator model lineup just yet. Instead, it’s the more budget-friendly model. And for those of you wondering, it is rather affordable. At the time of writing, Acer has not released the price of the Nitro 16. But if it’s anything like its predecessor, we expect it to be priced around PHP 80,000 to PHP 100,000 depending on the specs. There are a few things I wish I could change about this laptop, and one of them is the GPU. I hope Acer fitted the newer NVIDIA RTX 4000 series GPU instead of the older RTX 3050 included in this unit we have. However, the move to fit an older GPU could be to keep costs down. One other possibility is that this is an engineering unit. Another would be the keyboard layout.

The Acer Nitro 16 (AN16-41) is a capable gaming device thanks to its powerful hardware that is tamed properly by the potent cooling system. The optional Ryzen 7 7840HS can maintain a 4.77 GHz frequency in longer 100% stress while the temperature is just 67°C. This reminds us that the manufacturer has applied liquid metal to the CPU chip. The GeForce RTX 4060 can show 2595 MHz core clocks alongside 102W TGP after 30 minutes of max load. All this results in a snappy performance no matter the task. Still, the fans are pretty loud in “Turbo” mode but this isn’t a huge problem since the GPU power limit is the same in “Performance” and “Balanced” modes where the noise levels are way lower.

The Lenovo Legion Pro 5 and the Acer Nitro 16 are two budget offerings from Acer and Lenovo. The question is which one is actually the best bang for buck. They both claim great price to performance, but honestly, I think only one can truly stand up to that claim.

The Acer Nitro 16 is a budget offering from Acer, however, I will admit the model I’ve tested here is not exactly what most people would consider “budget”, so this is where I’m trying to reconcile where this laptop actually sits in the offering of gaming laptops for creators.

I must say I am impressed with the improvements on the Acer Nitro 16 this year. Even with these improvements Acer still decided to keep the poor quality plastic on the bottom cover. This was disappointing to me and it was something I was hoping they would have changed with the redesign.

The Acer Nitro 16 (AN16-42) is a true gaming device with almost zero compromises. The big thermal system cools well the processor and the graphics card – their temperatures under load are low while the frequencies are high. Also, the keyboard gets just slightly hot which allows you to use the laptop comfortably for long hours of gaming. Especially if you choose the “Performance” preset which offers almost the same CPU and GPU power limits and much lower noise levels than the “Turbo” preset. The snappy IPS display (8 ms pixel response times) is PWM-free and gets pretty color-accurate with our “Design and Gaming” profile (average dE 1.2).

While it’s not winning any design awards, Acer’s mid-tier gaming laptop, the Acer Nitro 16, offers some decent specs and great performance at an approachable price point. Not all of its specs are showstopping, with both its webcam and speakers leaving some “oomph” to be desired, but it’s a compelling option if your entry-level laptop isn’t cutting it for you.
