If you’ve been tempted by the simplicity and hassle-free nature of Chrome OS but wanted a bigger screen, then the Acer Chromebook 15 is for you. We do wish Acer had been more ambitious, opting for a brighter, higher quality, higher resolution screen, even if this had pushed up the price, rather than retreading old ground and taking the easy way out.

Chromebook isn’t for everyone, particularly those people who need to use legacy applications. For the rest, if whatever you need works in the browser, you’re set for Chrome OS. Perhaps Acer’s hunk, or something smaller.

The Acer Chromebook 15 is a solid computing device, with great value for its $350 price tag. The thick plastic chassis not only looks great, but offers a level of durability and build quality that isn’t often seen at this price range. The 15.6-inch FHD display might not be perfect, but 1080p resolution is another nice boon at this price. Not too mention the laptop’s long lasting battery life and strong performance with its fifth generation Intel Celeron CPU.

The model I tested retails for $350, a fair price for what you get given the rest of the Chromebook market. It’s worth noting though $250 will get you the same body without the HD screen. However, given that the screen is the main selling point here, it’s hard to take the cheaper model with its 1366 x 768 pixel display seriously. A screen this big should be stuffed with pixels.

The Acer Chromebook 15 (CB5-571-C09S) may be the largest model ever, but when you boil it down, that's really all it has to offer. Otherwise, it offers a standard Chromebook experience, just with a larger display and chassis. If you've been feeling cramped by the small size of most models, then perhaps this is the system for you. For most shoppers, however, I'd recommend looking at other Chromebooks with unique features, as there are plenty of systems in this price range that offer more compelling takes on the basic Chromebook, like the Toshiba CB35-B3340 Chromebook 2, which has a 13-inch full HD display and Skullcandy audio, or the Editors' Choice HP Chromebook 11 (Verizon LTE), which offers more mobility, thanks to wireless data.

The Acer Chromebook 15 is a excellent Chrome OS laptop, but it asks you whether you need a machine this big just to run a Chrome browser? For most people, that answer would be no, but I would easily pick this machine over any budget 15.6-inch Windows laptop. It's simply better built and comes at a better price to boot. The 15-inch display on this laptop itself would even be worth the $349 or £249 (about AU$458) price of admission.

There's really only one question you need to ask yourself in considering Acer's Chromebook 15: Are you looking for a large-screen Chrome OS laptop that can serve as a desktop replacement? If yes, then the $350 Chromebook 15 is almost certainly the system for you.

If you're looking for a simple laptop that works well, and don't need to carry it everywhere, the Acer Chromebook 15 is a solid investment. Its large display is good for Web surfing and working on spreadsheets, and its speedy performance makes it a dependable device for productivity. The loud speakers and long-lasting battery are other pluses. I just wish the screen were brighter and more colorful.

Acer has a history of building excellent Chromebooks. That may be due of experience; it was, along with Samsung, one of the first two manufacturers to jump on board. And the Chromebook 15 continues the company’s record of hits. Aside from the design, which may appear gaudy to some, there’s a lot to like and little to complain about. The display is excellent, battery life is respectable, and performance is excellent.

The Chromebook market is still in its infancy, but the ecosystem has already proved itself to offer incredible value for money – just look at the £199 Toshiba Chromebook 2 for proof of that. Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-362Q
The Acer Chromebook 15 has a large 15.6 inch display unlike the previous 11 inch Chrome OS systems. The backbone of the system is an Intel Core i3 processor clocked at 2 GHz and paired with a 4 GB of DDR3 RAM. Onboard storage is only 32 GB and there is no optical drive as well. However, there are two USB ports and one of it is a USB 3.0 port. These ports can be used to extend the storage on flash drives or external hard drive. Despite the size of the notebook, the keyboard does not feature a number pad. Instead the space on the sides of the keyboard provide upward facing speakers. The weight of this Chromebook is about 2.2 kg and the 4 cell battery can last up to 9 hours of use according to manufacturer. The height of this device with its lid closed is just 1 inch (2.54 cm), which makes it portable. As the name indicates, the operating system used is Chrome OS. The device is mostly from plastic and available in two colors; black and white. As a conclusion, this Chromebook is suitable for first time purchasers with a tight budget who intend to use the device for basic web surfing and watching videos.Specifications

Is the Acer Chromebook perfect? To put it flatly, no. If we were sourcing the parts, we would have specified a better, slightly higher-res screen, a Core i3 CPU with 4GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard storage, and much better speakers and sound engineering. Of course, then it would be a $400 or $500 Chromebook. For $199, we’re happy to live with its shortcomings in order to be able to afford one (or even two) extra Internet devices around the house.

Acer Chromebook 15 CB515-1HT-P099
Acer’s latest Chrome OS effort is a proper beast, designed to live happily on a desk and occasionally be carried around the home. With the catchy full title of Chromebook 15 CB515-1HT, this 15.6-inch laptop serves up Full HD visuals and impressive usability. Users will be glad to hear that these features require a low asking price. With a meaty 15.6-inch chassis, that’s more reminiscent of Acer’s affordable Windows laptops. This machine breaks the scales at almost 2 kg, so user will certainly notice when it’s stashed in their knapsack. Like the Acer Chromebook 14 before it, this notebook sports a silver design that’s not too far off Apple’s MacBook stylings. Of course, as this is a budget-friendly laptop, users don’t get a premium metal chassis. However, the Chromebook 15’s plastic frame feels sturdy. It wasn’t too bothered at being chucked in a bag and generally knocked around. Acer has stuffed an Intel Pentium N4200 chipset into the Chromebook 15, backed by 4 GB of RAM. This proved to be absolutely fine for playing around with several apps at once. A user can stream HD videos at the same time as messing around in a web browser and messaging mates with no sign of a slowdown. That 15.6-inch IPS touchscreen is rather good for the asking price. For one, the touch controls work well. A user can zip through web pages and documents quickly and easily while selecting text is a doddle. The display also supports multi-touch, for pinch zooming. Viewing angles are rather narrow, as the picture darkens once users tilt the screen away from their face. Thankfully the Chromebook 15’s hinge allows a user to tilt the display all the way back, 180 degrees until the lid is touching their desk. So the user shouldn’t have any trouble finding a comfortable working position. Despite the beefy build, connectivity is pretty much standard. A user gets a pair of full-sized USB 3.0 ports and a couple of Type-C USB ports, split between the two sides for an easy life. Besides that, all users get a microSD memory card (for expanding the 64 GB of storage) and a Kensington lock slot. There’s no dedicated video output, although a user can always hook up a monitor or TV using one of those Type-C ports. If a user is after a Chrome OS machine to carry around all day, then the Chromebook 15 is far from the best choice. Acer and rivals such as Asus have launched plenty of Chrome notebooks that are more compact and considerably lighter. However, as a simple device for the family to share, the Chromebook 15 is perfectly fine. Strong usability means staying productive and browsing the web is a breeze, while the Full HD screen is good enough for kicking back with a movie. N2830: Soc with an integrated dual core Atom processor clocked at up to 2.4 GHz and an Intel HD Graphics GPU.
N3060: SoC with an integrated dual core Atom processor clocked at 1.6 - 2.48 GHz, an Intel HD Graphics GPU and a dual channel DDR3L-1600 memory controller.
Celeron N3450: Frugal quad-core SoC from the Apollo Lake series for inexpensive notebook. Runs with clocks between 1.1-2.2 GHz and integrates a DirectX 12 capable graphics adapter. Compared to the previous Atom generation, the per-MHz performance of the CPU architecture was vastly improved and the graphics adapter was improved as well.
Celeron N3350: Apollo Lake family, dual-core processor (SoC) that first saw the light of day in 2016. Its two cores run at 1.1 GHz to 2.4 GHz; these are not Hyper-Threading-enabled meaning there are no additional threads. This chip has a fairly competent integrated graphics solution, Intel HD Graphics 500, and eats very little (~6 W). Celeron N3350 features the Goldmont CPU microarchitecture that came to replace Silvermont (2013), bringing with it several welcome improvements diluted with just a few questionable design decisions. The CPU is Secure Boot-compatible; technically, it will have no issue running 64-bit Windows 11. The average N3350 in our database is just as fast as Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 is in multi-thread loads; the two cores of this Celeron trail behind a single core of any half-decent CPU such as the Intel Core i3-7130U.
N3160: Frugal quad-core SoC based on the Atom architecture "Airmont" for inexpensive notebooks. Runs with clocke between 1.6-2.24 GHz and includes a graphics adapter with DirectX 11.2 support.
Intel Core i3:
5005U: Broadwell-based ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core processor for notebooks and ultrabooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 5500 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
Intel Core i5:
5200U: Broadwell-based ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core processor for notebooks and ultrabooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 5500 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
Intel Pentium:
Pentium N4200: Low power quad-core SoC from the Apollo Lake series for inexpensive notebook. Runs with clocks between 1.1-2.5 GHz and integrates a DirectX 12 capable graphics adapter. Compared to the previous Atom generation, the per-MHz performance of the CPU architecture was vastly improved and the graphics adapter was improved as well.
