Acer Aspire Vero is the result of the company's Earthion sustainability initiative; joins RE100 with a goal of going 100% green by 2035
Acer said it is taking environmental sustainability seriously and as such has come up with an in-house initiative called Earthion. At the company's next@acer event today, Acer introduced the Aspire Vero — a laptop made with Earthion principles in mind.
The company's Earthion initiative involves everything including renewable energy use, product and packaging design, production, logistics, and recycling. Earthion will be constantly evaluated and optimized as necessary.
Acer said that the Aspire Vero's case cover and keyboard are made from post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic while 80-85% of the packaging is made from recycled paper pulp. The Aspire Vero's adapter is housed in a paper sleeve instead of a plastic bag and in places where paper cannot be used, 100% recycled plastic is employed.
The sustainability approach extends to other aspects of the laptop as well including the use of soy ink for all prints on the carton, no dyes or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the housing, and easily accessible standardized screws for dismantling.
Coming to the device itself, Acer hasn't divulged too many details. That being said, the Aspire Vero is powered by a 11th gen Intel Core processor along with up to 1 TB M.2 SSD storage. The keyboard is slightly raised for ergonomic typing. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 6, 1x USB Type-C, 2x USB 3.2, and 1x HDMI 2.0-out.
Acer said that it has achieved up to 60% reduced carbon dioxide emissions in 2020. The company outlined its objective of relying exclusively on renewable energy sources by 2035. To that effect, Acer said that it has joined the RE100 initiative alongside global majors such as Adobe, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and 300 others with a 44% share in using renewable energy in 2020.
