Dell Concept Luna 2023 further aims to increase modularity, laptops with serviceable displays coming in 2024

Dell first spoke about Concept Luna back in 2021 with a renewed focus on sustainability. The following year, the company included telemetry and automation aspects to this concept. Today, Dell is further bolstering Concept Luna with a focus on modular design, reduced emissions, AI-powered telemetry, and product recycling.

This year's Concept Luna continues to build on the original by introducing what Dell refers to as a "circular design" that encompasses modularity. Dell says that laptops in the coming year will allow for serviceable display panels along with reduced use of adhesives and screws. It is not yet clear which 2024 Dell product lineups will feature serviceable displays and to what extent.

Dell also aims to use recycled steel and aluminum along with recycled cobalt for use in batteries in 2024 in an effort to lower emissions.

Complementing these are use of advanced telemetry, AI, and a more transparent way of letting the user know of component life via built-in diagnostics. Dell said that it is also making it easier for customers to return and recycle end-of-life devices.

The environmental impact of modern computing is pretty sizeable. The Oxford University notes that laptops in particular have a significant impact as the greenhouse emissions due to laptop manufacturing are higher than what would incur for a typical desktop (691 kg CO2e vs 621 kg CO2e). Users also tend to replace laptops more frequently than desktops, further compounding the problem.

Thus, it comes as no surprise that OEMs are increasingly turning their focus towards sustainability. Acer already has its Aspire Vero lineup on shelves for some time now, and the company has even announced the Aspire Vero 16 with Intel Meteor Lake Core Ultra processors.

Lenovo too has started toying with the idea of modularizing the ThinkPad with Project Aurora. Framework, a relatively new startup, beat established players to the finish line in the sustainability by being the first to mass market modular laptop designs.

Dell continues to evolve Concept Luna each year. While certain aspects of Concept Luna find use in Dell's current and upcoming product lineups, it will still be some time before we get to see a completely modular XPS or Alienware laptop.
