AMD showed off three Ryzen Z series chips at CES 2025: Ryzen Z2 Go, Ryzen Z2 and Ryzen Z2 Extreme. Of these, only the Ryzen Z2 Go has been out and about, with the remaining likely to debut later this yea. But, a previous leak said there are two more SKUs lined up, namely the Ryzen Z2 A and Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme. A new leak now sheds some light on the former.
X leaker @AnhPhuH, who initially leaked the Ryzen Z2 A, says the chip will be based on AMD's Van Gogh architecture. This is the same tier of hardware that powers the Steam Deck with a combination of Zen 2 and RDNA 2 parts. Essentially, its CPU is older than the Ryzen Z2 Go, making the Ryzen Z2 A the least powerful chip of the lot.
Then again, most of we know about the Ryzen Z2 series has been based on pure speculation because the Ryzen Z2 (Hawk Point) and Ryzen Z2 Extreme (Strix Point) are yet to surface. AMD's silence on the matter hasn't helped, either. Regardless, the Ryzen Z2 A should further lower the barrier to entry for handhelds, as the ageing chip will undoubtedly be more affordable than its newer offerings, allowing OEMs to hopefully pass on savings to end users.
