AMD’s Ryzen 7 7800X3D still appears to be the fastest gaming processor, even with Intel’s recently released i9-14900K. One may argue that the low framerates are slightly better on the Intel CPU, but this clearly does not justify the current price difference of over US$120, which is for the MSRPs alone. If we add in the US$80 discount offered by MicroCenter for the R7 7800X3D, the choice is simple. Note that this discount is only offered for in-store pickup only.
Intel did not manage to score a clear win this time, as its CPUs are lacking something similar to AMD’s 3D V-Cache. Team Blue said that it will add more L3 cache by late 2024 at the soonest, but until then, the AMD X3D processor will remain the gamer’s choice, especially for pricing purposes.
Despite having only 8 cores and 16 threads, the R7 7800X3D consistently delivers better gaming performance over the R9 7900X3D and R9 7950X3D with more cores. This quirk that has to do with the CCD design is supposed to get fixed with the future Zen5 models releasing next year. MicroCenter also has great deals for the Ryzen 9 7900X3D that is now discounted down to US$469.99 and the Ryzen 5 5600X3D that is down to US$199.99.
