2020 Dell XPS 15 9500 could be the full 16:10 redesign we've been looking for to tackle the MacBook Pro 16
(April 2, 2020 update: The rumored GPU is a GTX 1650 Ti and not the older GTX 1650 Max-Q that we previously stated.)
In 2019, Dell expanded its XPS 13 series to include a 16:10 XPS 13 convertible. That all-new chassis went on to inspire the redesigned 16:10 XPS 13 9300 clamshell that launched earlier this year. Since Dell utilizes similar chassis designs for both its 13-inch and 15-inch XPS models, it's only a matter of time before the 15.6-inch XPS 15 would receive the same 16:10 treatment.
This year may finally be the year where Dell will fully refresh its XPS 15 design after four years of using the same chassis. A recent listing on UserBenchmark lists the XPS 15 9500 with next-gen Comet Lake-H CPUs and the yet-to-be-released GTX 1650 Ti. What's more interesting, however, is the claimed 16:10 3840 x 2400 resolution in contrast to the 16:9 3840 x 2160 resolution on current XPS 15 9570 SKUs. This makes it more likely that Dell will decrease the size of the chin bezel on the XPS 15 much like what they have done on the XPS 13 with additional physical revisions along the edges and hinges.
While a new look would be nice, we're more concerned about the performance of the upcoming system. Last year's XPS 15 had trouble maintaining very high clock rates with the Core i9 CPU and we might see the same again should the redesigned chassis be even thinner. It'll definitely be something we look forward to testing as the devil will always be in the details.
