110 W vs. 175 W TGP GeForce RTX 3080 Ti: How much of a performance boost can users expect?
Some GeForce RTX 3080 Ti laptops are faster than other laptops with the same GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. Just like with many Max-Q laptops in the past, the often overlooked TGP values shouldn't be ignored when deciding between different gaming laptops based on performance.
Laptops sporting the mobile GeForce RTX 3080 Ti are now available and, just like with the regular non Ti SKUs, the RTX 3080 Ti can be found in various TGP ranges from 80 W all the way up to 175 W. Larger laptops like the 17.3-inch MSI GE76 tend to target higher TGP levels while smaller laptops like the 15.6-inch Razer Blade 15 tend to aim for lower TGP levels.
Our time with the 110 W GeForce RTX 3080 Ti GPU in the Blade 15 and 175 W GPU in the GE76 has shown that the 175 W version can be up to 20 percent faster than the 110 W version. This performance gap wide enough that some laptops with the regular "slower" GeForce RTX 3080 like the Alienware m17 R4 can outperform our 110 W GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. The performance gap will be noticeable if running more demanding games at higher resolutions to create a GPU-bound scenario.
Laptop gamers who want to maximize performance prior to purchasing will want to look closely at the specifications for the TGP values which can give a better idea of graphics performance. Many manufacturers do not overtly advertise these values and instead only list the GPU as the "GeForce RTX 3080 Ti".

After graduating with a B.S. in environmental hydrodynamics from the University of California, I studied reactor physics to become licensed by the U.S. NRC to operate nuclear reactors. There's a striking level of appreciation you gain for everyday consumer electronics after working with modern nuclear reactivity systems astonishingly powered by computers from the 80s. When I'm not managing day-to-day activities and US review articles on Notebookcheck, you can catch me following the eSports scene and the latest gaming news.
