The Steam Machine and PS5 Pro are becoming too expensive because of the DRAM crisis
The DRAM crunch is hitting console and PC gamers alike. Starting today, the Sony PlayStation 5 Pro officially costs €899, while Valve has so far declined to confirm the price of the Steam Machine. Anyone looking to spend about €899 on a gaming PC currently has two main options.

Sony is increasing the price of the PlayStation 5 and the PS5 Pro by €100 each today, which means the more powerful PlayStation now costs €899. According to rumors, the Steam Machine will launch at a similarly high price. Anyone who does not want to wait that long and would rather buy a gaming PC in this price range today essentially has two options, as a look at a German price comparison shows.

€899 will currently get you almost exclusively gaming PCs with either an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 or an AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT, each with 8GB of VRAM. In addition, nearly all gaming PCs at this price now offer only 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. They also usually rely on somewhat older AMD Ryzen processors. Here is how two typical €900 gaming towers compare with the PlayStation 5 Pro and the Steam Machine:

As the comparison clearly shows, the PC market still offers competitive gaming towers despite the DRAM crisis, at least if buyers are willing to accept compromises on SSD capacity. Beating the performance of the Steam Machine is still easy for €899 even in 2026, though it remains to be seen whether Valve’s console-PC hybrid will end up significantly cheaper.

While the PCs mentioned require more space and power, they can also be upgraded later once DRAM and SSD prices fall again. Combined with graphics cards that already outperform the PlayStation 5 Pro and the flexibility of the PC ecosystem, PCs are the better choice for many buyers.
