Earlier today, GoPro finally confirmed the date of its long-awaited Max 2 launch event. While the company did not refer to the action camera by name, the design shown matches that GoPro showcased earlier this summer as the Max 2. Additionally, the official teaser outlined that GoPro has a third action camera release planned this year as well, having introduced the Max (2025) in February (curr. $249 on Amazon).
For the time being, GoPro is leaving fans in the dark about what else it has planned for September 23. Nonetheless, a substantial leak may have revealed the company's plans ahead of time. Surprisingly, the smaller camera shown in GoPro's teaser is not thought to be the Hero 14 Black.
Instead, The New Camera alleges that the second camera in question is actually something called the GoPro Lit Hero, a 4K model aimed at the budget end of the action camera market. Also capable of 1080p/120 FPS, the Lit Hero is rumoured to retail for between $199 and $299 rather than the $399 to $499 at which the Max 2 is anticipated to launch.
Apparently, the Lit Hero will be capable of capturing 12 MP still images too via a new camera sensor and a set of LED lights aimed at maximising lowlight performance. Reportedly, GoPro will advertise the Lit Hero as being waterproof to just 10 metres though, with up to 2 hours of battery life and what The New Camera describes as 'basic HyperSmooth' technology.
Meanwhile, the Max 2 will master 8K videos at 30 FPS but will need to drop to 5.7K for capturing 60 FPS content. A 1,800 mAh battery will be onboard too, as will a new chipset to improve photo and video processing times. As a prior leak indicated, GoPro has overhauled its cooling system for the Max 2 as well, which uses the camera's front panel as an extended heatsink. Currently, The New Camera expects GoPro to deliver the Hero 14 Black during the first three months of 2026, leaving an eighteen-month gap between it and the Hero 13 Black's release.
