MSI updates its FX and X-Slim series here in CeBIT yesterday with a few new improved models. The FX-series has been updated with the 14-inch FX400 and 16-inch FX600 notebooks. These two will come equipped with NVIDIA Optimus technology, which will let the user switch between the integrated and dedicated graphics automatically.

FX400/FX600

Both FX400 and FX600 are powered by an Intel Core i5 processor, accompanied by the Mobile Intel HM55 chipset. The displays are HD ready with resolution of up to 1,366 x 768 pixels. The graphics card is expected to be the GT330M or the GT335M. There is no optical drive, and the 6-cell 3600mAh battery should be good for 3-odd hrs.

They look identical too. The exterior is covered in brown patterns, which extends to the interior as well. The side tapers towards the border. The keyboard is chiclet-styled and comfortable to type although it could’ve been wider towards both left and right side. The trackpad is situated below the keyboard towards a little left off the middle, with its two mouse buttons below it. The trackpad is solid matte finish and is comfortable to glide your fingers. The LED indicators are situated above the keyboard.

The area around the display is real glossy and will attract a lot of fingerprints and grease. The webcam sits right above the monitor – its usual place in a notebook. Despite the Dedicated Nvidia Graphics card, the machine weighs only 2.4-pound (1kg) runs almost up to 11 hours.

The sad thing we found out was that this is still a concept machine.

X620/X360

This X-Slim series member has a much improved chassis after the previous models were widely criticized by the press last year. The largest model X620 has a 15.6-inch display panel and comes with an Optical drive. It is powered by a 1.3GHz CULV Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 processor. The chipset is the Intel GS45 and the graphics card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5430.

It features up to 4GB of memory and 1GB DDR3 VRAM, 802.11b / g / n Wireless, Bluetooth (optional), HDMI, VGA, 2 x Audio, 3 x USB, CardReader and E-SATA / USB Combo. Pricing is not known. The layout is similar to the FX-series, except it has dotted patterns. The price is not revealed yet.

The X-Slim X360 has a 13-inch HD ready display panel with a resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels and aspect ratio 16:9. It runs on an Intel Core i7 620UM and an Intel HD graphics card. Pricing is not known.
