Chrome OS vs. Moblin vs. Ubuntu Netbook Remix – who takes the cake?

Chrome did not prove to be the best one

Although Chrome OS is a web-based OS, and other two are not, still since they all are built on Linux kernel – it makes sense to compare all the three. Michael Larable of Phoronix did a benchmarking for all three and the brand equity did not come into play here.

Intel’s Moblin 2.1 came out earlier this month, Canonical released Ubuntu Net book Remix 9.10 last month, and Google just recently offered the Chromium OS source codes to the developers worldwide.

The net book Mike has used is the Samsung NC10, and the operating systems tested are Bunt Net book Remix 9.10, Moblin 2.1, Fedora 12, Chromium OS, and opens USE 11.2.

Chrome OS claimed to be the lightest, but in these tests it consumed the most power. However, Enhanced Intel Speed Step Technology is not functioning appropriately with this Google net book operating system, which can be a reason why Chromium OS is going through such higher power consumption. But overall Ubuntu consumed the least power.

Overall Ubuntu Net book Remix 9.10 came out in front as being the best performer. The use of the EXT3 file-system by default in Intel's Moblin and Google's Chromium OS caused them to suffer in some of the tests compared to the others running with EXT4. We can give some discount to Chrome OS as it is still very early for a review – the OS comes out only later next year, and there’s still much to be improved as the company itself admits.

Google Chrome promises many things, and still in the early stage of development – so we can probably give some relaxation on this front. But one thing for sure, if Google wants this operating system to live up to the company’s reputation – a lot of work has to be done.
