JooJoo aka Crunchpad releasing shortly

The controversial tablet is finally shipping from next month

Fusin Garage, one of the makers of the Crunchpad, announced recently that the once almost doomed Tablet, will finally see the lights next month – but with a new name JooJoo.

“This is landscape changing manufacturing agreement in the CE hardware market in much the same way Dell changed the PC business model with its direct to consumer sales approach back in the 1990s,” said Fusion Garage Founder and CEO, Chandrasekar (Chandra) Rathakrishnan to Softpedia.

Softpedia reports that it will have a 12-inch panel with full Flash support. At $499 whether it can give a fitting competition to the fabled iPad remains to be seen.

The Crunchpad has been in controversy ever since its inception. First there was lack of fund, then a rift between the makers that led to the change of name from Crunchpad to JooJoo. It is probably one of those rare gadgets that were anticipated eagerly but faded away slowly. Only last month did Michael Arrington (CEO of TechCrunch, the man behind the idea of the Crunchpad) declared that the internet device would never see the light of day. Many say it was because of a rift between him and Fusion Garage, the partner in crime with Techcrunch on the Crunchpad project, announced its plans of releasing the Linux-based Web browsing tablet on its own.

The JooJoo won’t have only the iPad as competitor, but also the other giant in the business – Google. Also by the time the Chrome OS-bearing Google Tablet comes out later this year, there’ll already be some significant foe like MSI, Dell etc., and with the limited budget Fusion Garage has, it could be quite difficult for them to push this thing in the market.
