Japanese Consumer Electronics giant Toshiba has added a 16-inch laptop which it describes as a new "premium quality" multimedia device. The so-called Satellite A350 is sure to turn a few heads as far as the physical appearance is concerned; with a high-gloss black finish accented by silver stripes, along lays a row of illuminated buttons for quick access to multimedia functions. The laptop will include integrated Harmon Kardon speakers as well as Dolby Sound Room technology that should emulate "true surround sound feel".

This new machine is marginally larger than the usual 15.4-inch, will come either with an Intel Core 2 Duo or an AMD Turion CPU (a ZM80 model running at 2.1GHz), 4GB DDR2 memory and up to 320GB hard disk drive. Graphics are either courtesy of the Mobile Intel GMA 4500MHD chipset or the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650. Ports include three USB 2.0, one dual USB/eSATA, VGA output, S/PDIF and a multiformat memory card reader.

Other notable features include a DVD writer (no Blu-ray at this stage), a 1.3 megapixel webcam plus the option of either a Cosmic Black enclosure or a Silver-stripped "Fusion" one. The screen will be capable of displaying HD content, albeit the 720p type.

The A350 will be priced from £529 with a model available for £599 and a top range version for sale at £749. The Intel version is surprisingly the cheaper one.

Other specifications:

·         Windows Vista Home Premium

·         ExpressCard slot

·         Weight 2.94kg

·         Quoted battery life of up to two hours 15 minutes

·         802.11a/g/draft-N wireless, with optional Bluetooth.
