Intel releases a $125 affordable 40GB SSD

Is it becoming a trend now?

Intel has started shipping a 40B SSD for price of $125 called the X25-V Value SATA SSD – as reported by Computerworld. Note that we already have a sub-$100 SSD from OCZ technologies shipping now. Although Intel calls this affordable but the price per GB is almost same as its higher-capacity SSDs. But this may open up a new trend of low-cost SSDs in the market which has remained pretty unchanged till now.

Intel is marketing this SSD as an entry-level one and mainly intended to use as a secondary drive in a dual drive PC. Its main function will be to boot the system up faster and also facilitating faster access to key applications.

The X25-V is built on a five-channel architecture and the 40B comprises of four 10GB NAND flash chips. This drive comes with a sequential read/write speed of 170MB/sec and 35MB/sec respectively. As Computerworld points out – the X25-V can operate up to 25,000 input/output operations per second for reads and 10-times of that for writes. It is supposed to have at least 1.2 million hour MTFB (mean time before failure) rate – as promised by Intel. The X25-V has native command queuing as well as trim support to increase performance.

Even at a rate of $125 for 40GB, or $3.125 per Gigabyte, the SSD is far more expensive than the hard drive, which costs at least 10 times less than that. This is mainly because of the slower adoption of SSDs in the market till now, but times are changing as we can see more and more ultra-portable computer are coming now equipped with mainly 32GB or 64GB SSDs for a faster data transfer and security from the fear of crashing.
