Acer working on an 11.6-inch Aspire One?
After the huge success of the 8.9-inch and now the 10.1-inch Aspire One up their sleeves, Acer reportedly is working on an 11.6-inch version.
Aspire took the largest market share of the netbook category this year so far. So what – trust Acer for continuously reinventing the piece in a mood as if the previous ones were only for the purpose of Brand awareness. See for example, the 10.1-inch Aspire One that came out in Feb-March this year is almost the original expect a few minor changes not enough to make a significant difference to your overall experience. Maybe the panel and the relatively better-placed keyboard. But then once the legacy started, they quietly discontinued the 8.9-inch model – giving it the last boost of sales by those who wanted the 8.9-inch one.
Now Macles reports that there is another rumor of the second largest laptop-maker of the world working on an 11.6-inch machine under the same brand name Aspire One, but this time with sizeable upgradation. The first thing you’ll notice is of course the new 11.6-inch display with a resolution of 1366x768 and a 16:9 aspect ratio. Along comes a redesigned full size keyboard with flat keys. The overall design is very similar to a previously revealed model.
Another major difference is that all previous Aspire One models use an Intel Atom N270 and the Intel Mobile 945GSE chipset with integrated GMA950 graphics core. The new model uses an Intel Atom Z530 and the Intel SCH USW15S Poulsbo chipset, with integrated GMA500 graphics core. The GMA500 is actually a rebranded PowerVR SGX 535 licensed from Imagination Technologies and features hardware decoding of H.264 and a few other codecs – as reported by Macles.
The Poulsbo platform has a TDP of merely 4.3W instead of the previous 11.8W that reduces the power consumption greatly, and that does also include Intel HD audio which is now integrated into the chipset.
Battery life is has increased to 4 hours with the 3-cell and 8 hours with the 6-cell battery.
