Toshiba announces industry's first 128GB mSATA and half-slim SSD modules

The release of Toshiba's two new series of SSDs later this year will offer consumers significant improvements over existing SSD technology


Toshiba has recently announced that it is currently developing new SSDs based on its current multi-level cell NAND flash memory technology. The manufacturer is working on two series: the SG series for UMPCs and netbooks, and the HG series for performance and gaming notebooks. Both series support AES encryption and Windows 7's TRIM command.

Toshiba claims that the SG series features the industry's first 128GB mSATA and half-slim SSD modules. SSDs in the SG series have a maximum sequential read speed of 180MB/s and a maximum sequential write speed of 70MB/s. The SG series' 128GB SSD is a seventh of the volume and an eighth of the weight of a 2.5” SSD, and apparently consumes a fraction of the power.

The HG series' SSDs contain an MLC controller, and consequently have very high maximum sequential read and write speeds of 250MB/s and 180MB/s respectively. Toshiba is manufacturing 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB models for this series, which measure 2.5”. The HG series also contains smaller 1.8” drives, which will come in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities and be available with or without cases and LIF sockets. These measurements give an indication of the significant improvements to SSDs consumers can expect in the near future from Toshiba and other manufacturers.

This development in SSD technology should help drive the evolution of laptops and UMPCs into particularly light and energy efficient computers. Toshiba plans to release samples of the new drives this quarter and mass produce the SSDs during the second quarter of this year. The company hasn't yet mentioned the likely price of its new technology.
