Toshiba announces its latest docking station, the Dynadock V

Toshiba's Dynadock V is a smaller version of its cousin, the Dynadock U and offers fewer ports and features

Toshiba has announced a new model in its docking station range, the Dynadock V. The V connects to laptops via a single USB cable, like its cousin, the Dynadock U. It is available to buy directly from Toshiba, for an MSRP of $119.99 and it should ship within five weeks.

Toshiba claims its new docking station is compatible with Windows 7 and backwards compatible with 'all Windows-based PCs'. The V has an integrated GPU, which is capable of supporting an external VGA or DVI-I monitor with a resolution of up to 1920 x 1080. The V supports up to three displays, via a configuration of one direct connection to an external display, one display connected to the laptop and the laptop's own display.

Users can charge USB-powered devices, such as MP3 players or cell phones using the V's front USB (dubbed a 'Sleep-and-Charge' port), which provides power to a connected device even when a connected laptop is off.

The slightly larger and heavier Dynadock U features two Sleep-and-Charge USB ports, an integrated GPU (1920 x 1200) and an integrated audio card capable of providing 7.1 surround sound via an S/PDIF port. The U can also support the aforementioned three-display configuration. Whilst the MSRP of the Dynadock U is $30 greater than the V's MSRP, Amazon.com sell the U for $101.97.

Toshiba doesn't highlight a USP for its new product, so it is difficult to differentiate it from its apparently superior cousin, the U. It appears that the well-received Dynadock U offers users a little more functionality than the V for a smaller price. The U also has a wireless option, but it isn't clear whether Toshiba is planning to implement this feature with the V. Here are the specifications for both docking stations as displayed on Toshiba's product pages:-
