The U100 was turned into a Tablet in only $350 and many additional functions enabled
With the Tablet craze creeping on the market, there a people who tried their hands on turning their existing systems into a tablet, well…mostly for the trip of hacking a system. Alexbates over on the Insanely Wind forums has done something similar with his Wind U100 a week ago. He turned the netbook into a tablet complete with a touch screen that he broke in the process.
This involves first removing the keyboard by taking out the battery and exposing the motherboard connector. Then he mounted the touchscreen on where the keyboard used to be and connected the wires. Not much of a work really, but you’ll have to take care of the unnecessarily hung wires and all. It costs him $350 and got him 10 times storage, 2 times speeds, VGA out, USB ports and a built-in card reader. It also got Bluetooth capabilities once he connected the Bluetooth dongle.
One difficult part was in using the Fn-related keys. Once you have removed the keyboard, the Fn key goes with it, and there are not many external keyboards that come with this.
It is still a work in progress and the initial photographs are here as you can see. He promised to put up a video also. So keep a track of this page.
