Modular Framework Laptop 13 now comes with newest AMD Ryzen 7040U "Phoenix" APUs
Following the announcement of the AMD Ryzen 7040U “Phoenix” APUs, Framework has announced that the Framework Laptop 13 is now available to pre-order with the latest Zen 4 and RDNA 3-based APUs from AMD. As is the case with all Framework laptops, you can buy the Ryzen 7040U mainboard, DDR5 RAM sticks for the SO-DIMM slots, and a compatible Wi-Fi module from the company to upgrade your Framework laptop 13 to the new platform. Alternatively, you can also order a new Framework Laptop 13 with the Ryzen 7040U chips.
Framework is offering consumers the option to choose between a Ryzen 5 7640U and a Ryzen 7 7840U APU. For the uninitiated, the Ryzen 5 7640U features 6 cores/12 threads, a Radeon 760M RDNA 3 iGPU, a base clock frequency of 3.5 GHz, and a boost clock of 4.9 GHz. While we are yet to get our hands on a notebook equipped with a Ryzen 7040U Phoenix processor, we have reviewed the new ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 rocking a Ryzen 9 7940HS and found the Phoenix-HS APU to be an excellent performer.
Moving on, Framework claims the Laptop 13 can handle the Ryzen 7040U processors operating at up to 28 W under full load. Per AMD, the Ryzen 7040U chips have a TDP range of 15-30 W.
The DIY Framework Laptop 13 kit with the Ryzen 7040U APUs is up for pre-order for a starting price of US$849. You can also pre-order an already configured unit from the company for an initial price of US$1,049 for the machine featuring a Ryzen 5 7640U, 8 GB of DDR5 memory, and 256 GB of storage.
