The Hama Key Finder has been available since last year, but has only been compatible with Apple's "Find My" network and could thus only be used by iPhone users. This is now changing, as Hama has announced a new model that can also be used with Android smartphones.
Hama now uses both apps from Apple or Google to locate the trackers, namely "Find My" on iPhones and "Find My Device" on Android smartphones, at least until the app is renamed Find Hub in the latter case. How it works is nothing new: the integrated Bluetooth chip is designed to enable the Item Finder to be located by compatible smartphones at a distance of up to 50 meters, whereupon the location is transmitted to the owner. This means that the tracker can theoretically be located anywhere in the world as long as any compatible smartphone is within range.
This functions as usual without a subscription. The approximate location of the Item Finder is displayed on a map; if the tracker is nearby, a beep is emitted to make it easier to find. Hama does not use a UWB chip. The IPX5 certification promises protection against rain. The user-replaceable CR2032 button battery is said to last for around a year. The biggest advantage of the Hama Item Finder is that it is somewhat cheaper than an Apple AirTag.
Price and availability
Products from Hama are only officially available in select countries in mainland Europe as well as in China and United Arab Emirates, but some products are sold via third-party sellers. MaxGaming, for example, sells the Hama key finder for the Apple "Find My" network individually and as a four-pack for $15.89 and $55.89, respectively.
