HTC has been hinting at the imminent launch of a 'Viverse phone' for some time, and has now made good on these teasers with the new Desire 22 Pro. The OEM asserts that it comes with internals powerful enough to run metaverse apps as well as visit virtual spaces. Then again, the same specs are hardly flagship-grade, although you wouldn't guess it from its starting price.

HTC has made good on its resolution to make its smartphones metaverse-friendly with the Desire 22 Pro. On the other hand, the new device runs Android 12 like many others on the market - however, it seems to be a stock version of the OS without much first-party embellishment, which might prove a point in its favor.

The new Desire-series variant might be in need of one: in contrast with its Pro moniker, not to mention leaks that gave the impression of flagship status in this phone, it has launched with the Snapdragon 695 SoC. This processor, while 5G-capable, is also defined as "entry-level" in the same terms by at least one rival OEM

The Desire 22 Pro does have a 6.6-inch FHD+ 120Hz display - however, it is also LCD rather than OLED. However, HTC projects that a user will spend more time using the phone to drive a Vive Flow headset rather than looking at its screen. This can be done as long as its 4,250mAh battery holds out.

The 2 devices are now touted as the ideal mobile combo to access HTC's Viverse, or to experience the 22 Pro's other apps in a totally immersive manner. Otherwise, it is also backed as an ideal content-creation, streaming and editing machine with its triple rear cameras, although their 64+13+5MP configuration could be described as falling behind in 2022.

On that note, its appearance, while minimal and stylish with increasingly signature gold accents, still looks a little out of place this year. Its rear panel comes in black or pink with a wavy texture in both cases, which, although HTC doesn't acknowledge this directly on its new product page, would increase the likelihood that it is plastic. Then again, this might help explain its IP67 rating.

The Desire 22 Pro can now be pre-ordered through the Vive store as a single 8GB RAM/128GB internal storage SKU for €459 (~US$483), or bundled with a Vive Flow for €873 (~$918, whereas the headset itself can be found for $645 (€613)) in Europe; however, it will not ship until August 2022, with an offer of free shipping that is only available until June 30, 2022.
