While the Google Pixel 10 series is available in a range of new colors, the design of the Pixel 10, the Pixel 10 Pro and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold remains virtually unchanged from its direct predecessors. In an interview with Bloomberg, Google's head of hardware, Rick Osterloh, and Google's head of design, Ivy Ross, commented on the familiar design. Accordingly, Google plans to create a new design every two to three years.
Hence, Pixel smartphones with the new look are expected to launch by 2027 at the latest. The design of next year's models is said to be almost complete, while work on the 2027 models has already begun. However, real evolution in the future will come not in the hardware, but in the software, as users will primarily interact with smartphones via artificial intelligence such as Gemini, which will ultimately also influence the hardware design.
Even in its home market of the US, Google only managed to achieve a 3% market share in the second quarter. Osterloh does not currently believe that Google will ever become the market leader in smartphones, but he does believe that Google will continue to grow and sell a decent number of Pixel smartphones. Meanwhile, there is bad news for fans of flip phones, as Google currently has no plans to release an alternative to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7. There are also no plans for a smart ring, while work on the next-generation Pixel tablet has been "put on hold".
