GoPro has stepped up its teaser game following the launch of the DJI Osmo 360 earlier this week. For context, both companies are looking to get the better of Insta360, which has dominated the 360-degree action camera market in recent years with devices like the Insta360 X5 (curr. $549.99 on Amazon).
On the one hand, DJI has sought to maximise raw camera performance by including a 1/1.1-inch CMOS sensor that can capture 360-degree footage at up to 120 MP and 8K/30 FPS. Please see our Osmo 360 launch article for a detailed look at DJI's first 360-degree action camera. On the other hand, GoPro has not confirmed when the Max 2 will be available yet, nor what it will be bringing to the table over the existing Max (2025).
Instead, it has now posted a short teaser across its social media channels highlighting a potential advantage of the Max 2 over the Osmo 360. Namely, the Max 2 will support replaceable lenses in case one is damaged. In an apparent dig at DJI, GoPro notes that one only needs to twist a new lens into place, rather than using a set of tools and requiring post-installation calibration.
Moreover, GoPro has seemingly given approval for influencers to start posting about the Max 2 on social media. So far, we have found two influencers who have confirmed they are already testing the Max 2. Embedded above, the images clearly show the Max 2, but showing the device's same side and using similar accessories. Thus, it appears that GoPro is curating what gets published at this stage, likely before an official release by the end of the month at the latest.
