The GPD Win 5 was the only AMD Strix Halo-powered gaming handheld when the company officially unveiled it last week. However, Ayaneo has now revealed the Next 2 as an alternative with all the I/O and cooling of a Strix Halo mini-PC like the GMKtec EVO-X2 (curr. $1,499.99 on Amazon). Less than 24 hours later and GPD has returned with more details about the Win 5 before its full debut next month during ChinaJoy 2025 in Shanghai.
Shared via Cary Golomb on X, the new information explains how the gaming handheld's external battery pack operates. As the image below shows, the battery pack connects via what appears to be a proprietary port that sits beneath the device's rear-facing fan grille and air intake. Additionally, the battery pack is fixed via two separate connectors; the connector itself can be screwed in for extra security, too.
At this stage, it is unclear to what extent the external battery pack blocks the Win 5's air intake. With that being said, Golomb suggests that GPD has engineered a degree of space between the battery pack and the handheld when the pair are attached. Also, it looks like GPD has included a second intake on the device's bottom edge too.
Regardless, the external battery pack is expected to weigh around 343.5 g in part because of its 80 Wh capacity. Meanwhile, the Win 5 itself comes in at 556.5 g without its battery attached, which would make it about 4% heavier than the Nintendo Switch 2. Incidentally, a weight of 556.5 g would make the Win 5 about 7% lighter than the Win 4, despite featuring a 7-inch display. The former's overall weight will rise to roughly 900 g with its battery attached, though. Please see our earlier article for full GPD Win 5 device specifications.
