AppleInsider has shared new insights into the state of the Mac mini following last year's overhaul with Apple M4 generation chipsets (curr. $499 on Amazon). To recap, the website suggested last month that Apple was planning to refresh its tiny mini-PC with M5 chipsets just like the iMac, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.
Now, AppleInsider reports to have received information confirming that Apple is currently developing two new Mac mini variants. For context, the current M4-based Mac mini is associated with the internal model number J773g. Meanwhile, Apple distinguishes M4 Pro variants with the designation J773s.
According to AppleInsider, Apple has returned to 'g' and 's' identifiers for its J783 generation. Therefore, it has inferred that J783g and J783s relate to M5 and M5 Pro versions of the Mac mini. By extension, one would expect a third variant to exist if Apple were to bring M5 Max chipsets to the Mac mini series.
Last year, Apple introduced the current Mac mini a day before its MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16 laptops. Based on repeated rumours, the latter two will miss Apple's typical autumn launch schedules. Thus, it is unclear at this stage whether the same will apply to new Mac mini releases.
