The 15-inch Aspire 7 appears to offer pretty much the same user experience as its bigger 17-inch sibling with one notable difference – the screen. Surely, the IPS panel here is greatly appreciated but compared to the 17-inch IPS display, this one is quite disappointing. It lacks half of the sRGB color gamut and its maximum brightness isn’t enough for comfortable outdoor use, for example. So if image quality is your top priority, you will be better off with the 17-inch version.

Acer Aspire 7 A715-71G-71Q5

The Acer Aspire 7 A715-71G-71Q5 offers a good performance at an acceptable price. It is pretty much what users expect a modern 15-inch multimedia laptop to be. It's well built, gets an IPS display, a decent keyboard and latest generations hardware that allows it to handle all sorts of tasks with ease, from daily activities to demanding chores and FHD gaming. The laptop provides good performance hardware. The Intel Core i7 7700HQ CPU and the Nvidia GTX 1050Ti GPU with 4 GB of dedicated VRAM offer excellent performance in everyday operations thanks to the 16 GB RAM. The storage space consists of a 256 GB Intel PCIe SSD where Windows 10 Home is installed, while a traditional 1 TB mechanical hard drive is dedicated to file archiving. This laptop is fairly compact for its class and about half a pound (~1/4 kg) lighter than the Helios 300 and the VX15, which matters if you plan to carry it around often. Its outer case is made from black brushed aluminum, used for the lid-cover and the interior, and hard black plastic, used for the sides and the underbelly. However, the dark brushed metal surfaces mean fingerprints and smudges are easily visible all over the place. The screen of this Aspire 7 is a 15.6” Full HD IPS screen. The hinges are noisy but good, you can open the screen up to 180 degrees. The display of the Acer Aspire 7 A715 has very stable viewing angles, and there should be no impact during normal use. It’s a decent option that will do for most users, the same one that’s available on the Aspire VX15 and Aspire 5. The weakness of this Aspire 7 is certainly autonomy. The battery is a 49 Wh unit that, combined with good performance hardware, provides short battery life. The premises were all there, but it was slightly disappointing to have around 4 hours of autonomy under normal usage with 50 % screen brightness. The autonomy dropped drastically to about 2 and a half hours when accelerated. The GTX 1050Ti is activated with more important processes by bringing the fans to run faster to dispose of more heat, thus decreasing the period of power on the laptop. When it comes to the I/O, almost everything user would expect from a mid-range multimedia computer is available, which are 3 USB Type A and 1 USB type C ports, HDMI output, LAN, card-reader, Kensington Lock. Only one of those USB ports supports USB 3.0 speeds though, and that USB 3.1 Type C port is limited to gen 1 5 Gbps speeds (thus no Thunderbolt 3), but these traits are common in this segment. The 2019 Aspire 7 is an interesting notebook. It's compact and light, doesn't sacrifice on functionality or screen quality, and being powered by an Intel KabyLake-G hardware platform, it offers a rather unique mix of performance and efficiency in its class. Acer did skimp on a few aspects though, like the typing experience or battery size, among others, that's why I feel this needs to come down in price in order to become competitive, and I expect that to happen in the months to come.

Before we start, we have to consider the price tag of this notebook. We would like to give credit to Acer for giving their best to keep the costs down, while not really sacrificing the quality of their product. Yes, you won’t find Thunderbolt connectivity here, and unfortunately, there is no SD card slot of any sort. Also, the materials of the build are predominantly plastic, but this doesn’t mean that the laptop feels cheap.

Три полноформатных порта USB Type A позволяет свободно подключать все важные периферийные устройства без дополнительных хабов. Есть подсветка клавиатуры. Относительно моделей представительского класса ноутбук проигрывает в дизайне, а пластиковый корпус менее прочен (крышка экрана прогибается при усилии). Но все такие нюансы компенсируются доступной ценой.

In, conclusion if you’re looking for an affordable multimedia laptop that can do gaming on the side, it’s almost perfect. But I do wish it were a little lighter. With the charging brick, the laptop weighs more than 2.5 kilos and that can be a deal-breaker for some, especially if you’re looking to carry it every day. Initially, I was skeptical of the 5500U CPU and whether it would undermine the GTX 1650’s capabilities – and in gaming, to some extent it does. But as I tested the laptop for everyday use, I came to realize that the U series processor is more than capable of browsing the web and editing documents. I think it was the right choice not to go with an “H” series processor as it’d have severally impacted the battery life. If it were an Intel machine, “P” processors would’ve probably been a suitable replacement but that too would ramp up the price.

Intel Core i5:

i5-8305G: Quad-core notebook processor based on the Kaby Lake architecture running at 2.8 - 3.8 GHz. Integrates 4GB fast HBM2 graphics memory that may also be used as a CPU cache and including the high TDP of 65 Watts may lead to a higher CPU performance compared to the similar Core i7-7700HQ.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

i7-8705G: Quad-core notebook processor based on the Kaby Lake architecture running at 3.1 - 4.1 GHz. Integrates 4GB fast HBM2 graphics memory that may also be used as a CPU cache and including the high TDP of 65 Watts may lead to a higher CPU performance compared to the similar Core i7-7920HQ. Similar to the Core i7-8706G, but without vPro support.

AMD Picasso (Ryzen 3000 APU):

R7 3750H: Mobile Quad-Core APU using Zen+ cores clocked at 2.3 to 4 GHz and a Vega graphics card with 10 CUs clocked at up to 1400 MHz. The 3750H is the 35 Watt version of the 3700U with the same specs but a higher TDP for better performance under long periods of load.

R5 3550H: Mobile Quad-Core APU using Zen+ cores clocked at 2.1 to 3.7 GHz and a Vega graphics adapter with 8 CUs clocked at up to 1,200 MHz.

Intel Comet Lake:

i5-10300H: Comet Lake architecture (4th gen of Skylake) based processor for big and heavy laptops. Integrates four processor cores clocked at 2.5 - 4.5 GHz (4.2 GHz for all 4 cores) with HyperThreading support.

AMD Lucienne (Zen 2, Ryzen 5000):

R5 5500U: A hexa-core APU designed for use in ultra-thin, upper mid-range laptops. The Ryzen features six Zen 2 CPU cores running at 2.1 GHz to 4.0 GHz alongside the Vega 7 graphics adapter (448 unified shaders running at up to 1,800 MHz). One could be forgiven for thinking Ryzen 5 5500U is a renamed Ryzen 5 4500U - which is not the case. Ryzen 5 5500U is most similar to Ryzen 5 4600U, the most noteworthy difference between the two being the faster iGPU model of the former.

R7 5700U: A laptop-grade APU featuring eight SMT-enabled Zen 2 cores running at 1.8 GHz to 4.3 GHz and a Vega series graphics adapter with 8 CUs clocked at up to 1,900 MHz.

Intel Alder Lake-P:

i5-1240P: A mid-range 28 W Alder Lake family CPU featuring 4 performance cores and 8 efficient cores. This SoC is designed for use in ultra-light (yet actively cooled) laptops. The i5's performance cores are Hyper-Threading-enabled for a total of 16 threads. Core i5-1240P runs at 1.2 GHz to 4.4 GHz; it has a built-in 80 EU Iris Xe GPU and supports "Essentials" tier vPro features.
