ASUS has revealed the Zenfone 9, a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1-powered smartphone with a 120 Hz AMOLED display. Available from €799, the Zenfone 9 has multiple memory configurations, colour options and a 4,300 mAh battery that supports 30 W charging. Roughly as large as the Apple iPhone 13, the Zenfone 9 is slightly smaller than its predecessor and weighs 169 g.

ASUS has lifted the lid on the Zenfone 9, a more compact successor to the Zenfone 8. Specifically, the Zenfone 9 measures 146.5 x 68.1 x 9.1 mm, compared to the Zenfone 8's 148 x 68.5 x 8.9 mm dimensions. However, the Zenfone 9 weighs 169 g, matching its predecessor. Incidentally, the Apple iPhone 13 weighs 174 g with a 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.7 mm footprint.

As expected, the Zenfone 9 has a 5.9-inch AMOLED display that outputs at 2,400 x 1,080 pixels with a 120 Hz refresh rate. According to ASUS, the smartphone has a 90.02% screen-to-body ratio, a 240 Hz touch sampling rate, 1,100 nits of maximum brightness and 112% DCI-P3 colour space coverage. ASUS adds that it has protected the display with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus too, which should ensure good drop and scratch protection.

Separately, ASUS has paired the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 with 8 GB or 16 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of UFS 3.1 flash storage. Unfortunately, the device lacks microSD card expansion, although ASUS notes that the Zenfone 9 supports the NTFS file system structure for external HDDs. Also, the Zenfone 9 features a 4,300 mAh battery that supports 30 W fast charging via its USB 2.0 Type-C port. For reference, the Zenfone 9 has a 3.5 mm jack too, unlike almost every other Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1-backed smartphone.

Moreover, ASUS has equipped the Zenfone 9 with a Sony IMX766 sensor as its primary camera. Dubbed a 'flagship sensor', you can also find the 50 MP camera in the Nothing Phone (1). The Zenfone 9 features 6-Axis Hybrid Gimbal OIS though, which should improve stabilisation compared to contemporary stabilisation systems. Furthermore, the Zenfone 9 features a Sony IMX663 (12 MP) as its front-facing camera and a Sony IMX363 as its ultra-wide-angle camera, a 12 MP sensor too. For context, Google continues to use the Sony IMX363 as the primary camera on its mid-range smartphones, including the Pixel 6a.

The Zenfone 9 starts at €799 with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Also available with 8 GB of RAM or 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, ASUS will offer the Zenfone 9 in Midnight Black, Moonlight White, Starry Blue and Sunset Red colour options. All configurations will ship with ZenUI 9, ASUS' version of Android 12.
