iPhones and Android smartphones can be turned into vintage cameras with the Sandmarc Retro Filter
Sandmarc already offers macro- and telephoto lenses for the Apple iPhone, and now the manufacturer has now introduced a retro filter. This can be easily attached to any Apple iPhone and most Android smartphones using the clip provided and can be used with all rear cameras of the respective smartphone.
The Retro Filter is primarily intended to make photos softer, with details being reduced by 25% or 50%, depending on the kind of filter used. The glossiness of surfaces are reduced and bright areas are displayed somewhat darker. Harsh sunlight appears softer during the day while halo effects around light sources are more visible at night. This should give photos and videos a retro look, as the comparison image embedded below shows.
According to Sandmarc, the Retro Filter combines a polarizing filter with a diffusion filter, with the manufacturer using high-quality, multi-coated glass in a metal frame. The filter is also compatible with Sandmarc's telephoto, wide-angle and anamorphic lenses thanks to a step-up ring. Although the shape is reminiscent of a conventional camera filter and the diameter of 60 millimeters would be large enough for many lenses, it does not have a regular filter thread, so it cannot be used with dedicated cameras.
Price and availability
The Sandmarc Retro Filter will be available in the USA from August 2024 at a price of $99.99. The manufacturer has not yet confirmed details on prices and availability for the global market, although Sandmarc will also ship internationally for $19.95. More details about the Retro Filter can be found on the official product page.
