The Apple iPhone 15 Pro was originally supposed to come onto the market with innovative Taptic buttons, but these had to be postponed to a later iPhone model due to technical problems. Photos of an EVT prototype now show what these pressure-sensitive buttons would have looked like.

Before the launch of the Apple iPhone 15 Pro, there were numerous rumors about the so-called 'Taptic' buttons, which ultimately had to be canceled due to technical issues. The iPhone 16 is now set to receive a Taptic Action button.

The idea is relatively simple: the Taptic buttons were intended to be touch-sensitive, similar to the Home button on the iPhone SE. Instead of being simply pressed down like before, users would receive feedback from a vibration motor when a button is pressed. The advantage is that the Taptic buttons were designed to also recognize how firmly they are pressed, thus allowing for different functions to be carried out with the same button.

For example, an iPhone could be muted immediately when the volume down button is pressed a little harder. AppleInsider has now managed to get hold of an EVT prototype of the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max, which is one of the last prototypes with Taptic buttons before they were discontinued in April 2023. Externally, there are two main differences to the final iPhone 15 Pro Max.

On the one hand, the Action button has been made slightly larger and more rounded, while on the other hand, the volume buttons on the prototype are designed as a rocker, similar to the first-generation iPhone. According to AppleInsider, these Taptic buttons did move when pressed, unlike the Home button on the iPhone 7, but the click feedback consisted entirely of vibration and sound, even when the iPhone was switched off. The report from AppleInsider provides a deeper insight into the development and functionality of the Taptic buttons.
