iPhone as a film camera: ShiftCam and Apple unveil new ProRig

Apple has been positioning its iPhones more and more as professional video and filmmaking cameras for years. Back in 2011, Night Fishing became the first short film shot on an iPhone, using an iPhone 4. In 2018, Steven Soderbergh shot Unsane with three iPhone 7 Plus models and the FiLMiC Pro camera app, followed by another film, High Flying Bird, in 2019, this time shot on the iPhone 8. But the best-known iPhone film is probably 28 Years Later from 2025, which was shot using a particularly large number of iPhone 15 Pro Max models integrated into larger rigs.
Apple still rarely works directly with third-party manufacturers on a specific accessory system. With ShiftCam, however, the company made an exception, providing ongoing feedback throughout development, ensuring that Apple’s design language remains recognizable in the new rig, and supporting the product launch.

ShiftCam already offers a range of camera lenses and grips for the iPhone and will launch the ProRig system on Kickstarter later this year. The company initially announced it to people who had supported ShiftCam in the past, making ProRig the company’s 10th Kickstarter campaign.
The new rig is particularly well suited to the iPhone 18 Pro, whose camera features include a variable aperture, 4K/120p Dolby Vision, and ProRes RAW. ProRig is designed to make better use of these video capabilities with professional accessories. That includes the ability to mount numerous additional accessories alongside lenses, such as lights, filters, microphones, and grips.
The campaign is scheduled to go live specifically on October 23. Pricing is not yet known.
