iPhone Duo's camera doesn't match the iPhone 17e's, but Apple's spec sheet says it does

Apple has not disclosed the exact sensor size or optical format used in the iPhone Duo's 48MP Main camera, and early comparisons assumed it shared the smaller sensor found in the iPhone 16e and 17e, but new visual evidence suggests otherwise.

Apple confirms iPhone Duo carries a "48MP Dual Fusion" rear camera system: a 48MP Main camera at 26 mm and f/1.6, plus a 48MP Ultra Wide at 13 mm and f/2.2. Apple's spec listing for the Main camera includes "Hybrid Focus Pixels," the same term used for iPhone 17e, while iPhone 17 and 17 Pro list "100% Focus Pixels," Apple's wording for full-coverage phase-detection AF design. That wording is the basis for the theory that Duo shares its sensor with 17e, though it describes autofocus readout architecture rather than physical sensor size.

A separate comparison shared by X user @nikewrayy also lines up with that reading. After overlaying an official Apple iPhone Duo product photo onto an iPhone 17e press image in Photoshop, the Duo's dual-lens housing appears visibly larger than the 17e's single camera bump, and proportionally closer to the standard iPhone 17's camera module.

The camera module footprint includes the voice coil motor and OIS carrier alongside the sensor package itself, so this doesn't confirm the main camera's exact physical dimensions. Both approaches point in the same direction, however: the iPhone Duo's Main camera module measures closer to the standard iPhone 17 and 17 Pro than to the smaller module used in the 16e.
