iPhone 16 beats Galaxy S24 Ultra in DxOMark camera ranking but trails behind Google Pixel 9
The iPhone 16 Pro models are the ones that saw more noticeable upgrades over their predecessors, especially in terms of camera. For example, the 16 Pro features a periscope telescope, which the predecessor doesn't have, and an improved ultrawide sensor. Now, even though the standard phone has the same camera setup as the last-gen iPhone 15, it did see a bump in terms of camera performance.
As DxOMark has revealed, the standard iPhone 16 gets an overall score of 147 in its camera tests. This score is higher than the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (144 points) and its predecessor (145 points). However, the non-Pro Apple flagship is noticeably behind the Google Pixel 9 (128 GB curr. $649 on Amazon), which has an overall score of 154.
Regarding the main highlights, DxOMark notes that the new non-Pro Apple flagship can deliver a good overall camera experience for its segment. It praised the phone for outputting pleasant skin tones and good colors in both video and photo.
DxOMark has also praised the iPhone 16 for offering high levels of detail in indoor and well-lit environments. However, the smartphone benchmarking firm notes that the phone can output flare and hue shift artifacts in photos, and the limited dynamic range of the sensors can result in highlight clipping in both photo and video.
The team further notes that the lack of a telephoto sensor makes the iPhone 16 a less ideal choice for long-range photos. Other shortcomings highlighted by DxOMark include loss of detail in low-light conditions in videos and noise in low-light images. You can learn more about how the phone performed from the complete review that DxOMark has published online.
