AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT OpenCL benchmarks: 13% faster than the RX 6800 XT and 35% faster than the RX 6800

Although apparently slower than both the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 by 19% and 4%, the upcoming AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT (apparently a reference design board was used in the tests) is around 13% faster than the RX 6800 XT and no less than 35% faster than the RX 6800. However, it seems like the retail version will be faster.

A few hours ago, a benchmark result for the upcoming AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT was discovered by Twitter user APISAK in the OpenCL database. The board tested reached a maximum core frequency of 2.02 GHz during the benchmarking process so it is most likely that the retail version will be at least 20% faster (we'll mention a bit later why).

The OpenCL score of 169,779 points obtained by the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT (recognized as "gfx1030" by the benchmark) places this board right behind the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 (177,724 points) and the GeForce RTX 3090 (202,869 points). The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT scored 151,332 points, while the AMD Radeon RX 6800 only managed 125,991 points. Strange enough, the OpenCL benchmark detected only 40 compute units on the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT, since the final product should feature 80.

As promised earlier, this is why we can easily assume that the retail version of the RX 6900 XT will be at least 20% faster than the board that was mentioned above: This flagship "Big Navi" product is expected to hit the market with a maximum GPU clock speed of no less than 3 GHz. Obviously, this means that many custom versions that will hit the market as well will push that clock speed higher by at least 100 or 200 MHz.

The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT is scheduled to arrive on December 8 with a price tag of US$999 for the reference design. Sadly, it also seems that AMD might not give its AIB partners a green light for custom variants before 2021 (due to supply problems, of course), but this is something that remains to be seen.
