The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 is an Ethereum mining monster: overclocked cards deliver nearly 100 MH/s, double the Radeon RX 5700 XT
Leaked cryptocurrency mining benchmarks indicate that the upcoming NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 could be a very powerful option for cryptocurrency miners looking to mine Ethereum. The leaked benches indicate that, at stock, the GeForce RTX 3080 delivers nearly 75 MH/s under DaggerHashimoto. When overclocked, performance jumps to 93 MH/s.
To put these numbers into perspective, the Turing GeForce RTX 2080 Ti only turns in 54 MH/s, while the older flagship GeForce GTX 1080 Ti manages around 30 MH/s. The GeForce RTX 3080’s combination of a low price and high hashrate could make it the GPU of choice for crypto miners in 2021. However, there is a serious caveat: power consumption.
NVIDIA’s Ampere graphics cards have some of the highest TDPs we’ve seen in consumer single-card solutions. The GeForce RTX 3080 has a 320W TDP, 70W higher than the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. With an overlock in place, power consumption could easily breach 400W. Miners will need to play around with power limits, and memory and core clock speeds to maximize monthly returns. We’ll need to wait for the reviews to confirm whether the GeForce RTX 3080’s price/performance combo outweighs those power consumption numbers.
