More benchmark data about the GeForce RTX 3080 has leaked ahead of the card's official release next week. Based on initial findings, NVIDIA's US$1,499 card only just outperforms the US$699 RTX 3080 in many triple-A titles and by a margin as slim as 4.7%. The RTX 3090 fares better in synthetic benchmarks, but it can only achieve a lead of 10-20% for over twice the price of the RTX 3080.

The GeForce RTX 3090 does not formally arrive until September 24, but benchmark data is pouring onto the internet ahead of its official release. As we reported today, the RTX 3090 effectively outscored the RTX 3080 by 19% in UserBenchmark, but other leaked benchmark results are not as kind on NVIDIA's US$1,499 card. In short, the RTX 3080 comes within about 5% of the performance of the RTX 3090 in Forza Horizon and Rainbow Six Siege.

These scores are courtesy of TecLab, which posted a review of the RTX 3090 on Bilibili. The video has been removed from the Chinese video-sharing website, but it has been re-posted to YouTube. You can watch the video below until it is taken down, but Videocardz has grabbed several screenshots of the results and collated them into a table. TecLab tested the RTX 3090 in a setup consisting of an Intel Core i9-10900K, an ASUS ROG MAXIMUS XII APEX, a 1 TB M.2 SSD and 32 GB of DDR4 RAM, for reference.

It is worth noting that the 3DMark Time Spy results are slightly lower than those posted by Videocardz yesterday. These showed the RTX 3090 with a 19% lead over the RTX 3080. Similarly, @TUM_APISAK has found Geekbench results showing a performance difference of 15.7% between the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090. Nonetheless, these initial benchmark results show the RTX 3090 in a bad light with a peak performance advantage over the RTX 3080 of under 20%.

We have seen multiple people trying to defend the RTX 3090 on the basis of it being a card designed for professionals, but NVIDIA does not pitch it as such. On the contrary, NVIDIA focused on the card's gaming potential at its GeForce Special Event on September 1 with demos of gaming at 8K. Similarly, NVIDIA continues to claim that the RTX 3090 delivers the 'ultimate gaming experience' on its website. Early benchmark data does reinforce this to NVIDIA's credit, albeit while emphasising how close the RTX 3080 gets to the RTX 3090.
