Tipster @KkatCorgi recently made the claim that NVIDIA’s upcoming Ampere GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card will deliver up to 20 percent greater performance than the current king of the hill, the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. This aligns with what we know so far about the RTX 3080 - namely that it’ll run on a cut-down variant of the flagship GA102 variant. If true, this rumor opens up a number of interesting possibilities.
For starters, it suggests that the top-end GeForce RTX 3080 Ti could be as much as 40 percent faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. The RTX 2080 Ti occasionally struggles to hit 60 FPS in intensive games at 4K. A 40 percent performance uplift, together with Ampere’s alleged ray-tracing improvements, could mean that the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti could easily run titles at 4K/60 FPS, even with ray-tracing enabled.
We’ve seen a number of demos over the past month, from Cyberpunk 2077 to Watch Dogs Legion handing in a 1080p update with ray-tracing enabled on the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. Clearly a higher-tier graphics card is in need to run these games at 4K.
The rumor also correlates with some of the things we’ve heard about Big Navi. Earlier leaks indicated that the Big Navi flagship delivered 15-20 percent higher performance than the RTX 2080 Ti. If this is the case, AMD’s top-end card might only compete with the RTX 3080, leaving the RTX 3080 Ti in a class of its own.
