GPU docking stations based on Thunderbolt 3 are becoming increasingly common. While such devices are not unexpected from hardcore gaming manufacturers like MSI, Razer, or Aorus, major manufacturers like Dell and HP have their own respective solutions as well through the Alienware Graphics Amplifier and HP Accelerator, respectively. As Thunderbolt 3 becomes more mainstream, so too are the GPU docking stations.
Zotac is taking the concept one step further with its Amp Box and Amp Box Mini GPU docking stations by offering the same high-end GPU options in a more universal and accessible package. The smaller Amp Box Mini measures just 230 x 183 x 99 mm with support for desktop graphics cards of up to 150 W while the larger Amp Box can house 250 W dual-slot GPUs. In other words, the GTX 1060 would be a perfect fit for the former while enthusiasts can install up to a GTX 1080 Ti on the latter should they so desire. The Amp Box throws in RGB lighting to further differentiate it from the Amp Box Mini and it even made a prototype appearance at Computex earlier this year.
The manufacturer has not disclosed pricing or availability for any of its two upcoming docking stations. Based on the timing of the announcement, however, we can safely expect them to make appearances at CES 2018 for a launch in the weeks to follow. Until then, check out the full specifications for each model below.
