For several months now, YouTube has been displaying warnings to users with ad blockers, asking them to deactivate the blocker or take out a YouTube Premium subscription in order to watch ad-free. YouTube justifies these steps with the need to secure advertising revenue, which is an important source of income for both YouTube and the creators. However, it seems that the warnings are not enough. YouTube has introduced a new mechanism that makes it more difficult to use ad blockers.
As several YouTube users report on Reddit, videos on the platform are now skipped to the end if an adblocker is activated. This mechanism has apparently been rolled out more widely recently, but does not yet affect everyone. While some users understand and accept YouTube's need to generate revenue, others are frustrated and find the measures annoying and intrusive. In particular, the long and unskippable ads are causing displeasure.
According to some Reddit users, the new YouTube mechanism can be circumvented by using the adblocker uBlock Origin. If this does not work, the only option is to deactivate the adblocker or purchase a YouTube Premium subscription, which currently costs around $14 per month. Students can get the subscription for $7 per month.
