The 10th World Water Forum, held on the island of Bali from May 18 to May 25, was not the only event in Indonesia to have drawn international attention last weekend. Elon Musk came to the South-Eastern Asian country on Sunday to officially kickstart Starlink services. The event took place at a hospital; of over 10,000 clinics found in the 279-million-strong nation, a quarter reportedly has no reliable Internet connection.
I think it’s really important to emphasize the importance of Internet connectivity and how much of a life-changer that can be and a lifesaver that can be - Elon Musk
The services will now be available to both government-funded organizations and private customers.
While in Indonesia, Elon has also reportedly had a "fruitful" conversation with the president of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe. The South Asian country with a population of around 22 million might just become the 100th entry on the list of countries that have SpaceX doing legal business on their soil.
The last country in the region to join that list was Malaysia, in 2023.
