The Extrack app separates vocal and instrument performances from a song, allowing musicians to select any track to play along like a band member. Chord progressions are automatically displayed, simplifying learning of guitar and piano parts.

Yamaha Japan has unveiled Extrack, an app designed for musicians to learn and play songs as if they were performing with a band. The Apple iOS app is currently available for download today, while the Android OS app will be released in April.

Extrack first analyzes downloaded song files to identify vocals and instruments, then separates each into individual tracks. Each track's volume can be adjusted, even muted, allowing solo musicians to play along with one instrument or focus on learning just one track.

To assist with learning, chord progressions for piano or guitar tracks are automatically displayed for convenience. Additionally, the playback speed can be adjusted and a section of a track can be automatically repeated until a track is mastered.

For the vocal track, a key change feature adjusts the track to suit the natural vocal range of a singer. All of the instrument tracks can be muted during playback so users can focus on learning the lyrics.

The free app plan allows musicians to separate up to five songs per month into four tracks (bass, drums, vocal, and other), while the paid plan expands that to an unlimited number of songs and seven tracks (bass, brass, drums, guitar, piano, vocal, and other). Use of the paid plan is currently free until August.

The paid plan expands the Extrack app features and will be free to use until August. (Image source: Yamaha Japan)

Released an app "Extrack" that allows you to

play your favorite songs as if you were a band member

-Yamaha's technology such as sound source separation makes it easy to create a sense of realism in the session-

On Tuesday, March 18, 2025, Yamaha Corporation (hereinafter referred to as "Yamaha") will release "Extrack," a new music app that allows users to play their favorite songs as if they were band members. "Extrack" is a coined word based on the concept of extracting the necessary elements from a track (song) and providing an extra (special) performance experience while arranging it. In the app, cutting-edge technologies such as sound source separation and chord analysis functions are used to solve problems faced by players of musical instruments such as guitar, drums, bass, and piano, such as "individual practice becomes monotonous" and "it is not easy to practice together with others". It provides a sense of realism as if you were playing with a band member, creating an experience that allows all performers, from beginners to professionals, to enjoy playing more.

Highlights of Extrack

You can take out only the sound of the instrument you play from the song and know the phrase you want to play as if you were holding it in your hands!

Tempo change, repetitive playback can be easily operated, and practice efficiently!

Enjoy playing with instrument parts other than your own, as if you were a band member!

Background to the development of "Extrack"

In recent years, the number of people who enjoy playing musical instruments on their own has increased, and the ways in which people enjoy music have diversified. On the other hand, there are many people who have problems such as "I get bored if I continue to play alone" or "I don't have the opportunity to form a band". Therefore, we have developed an app called "Extrack" that emphasizes "pure enjoyment of playing".

Extrack is an app that allows you to practice and enjoy sessions with your favorite songs as if you were playing them with a real artist. Members who actually enjoy playing musical instruments were involved in the development and thoroughly pursued ease of use from the performer's point of view. Rather than simply listing cutting-edge technologies as features, we've put the experience together in an app that anyone can easily enjoy.

Features of "Extrack"

1. Sound source separation function: A function that allows you to extract or mute the sound of a specific instrument from a band performance.

The audio of the imported music data is separated into each instrument part such as vocals, guitar, bass, and drums.

You can freely adjust the volume of each part, and you can practice flexibly according to the situation, such as "listen only to the sound of the instrument you play and copy it by ear", "mute the sound of the instrument you play and play with other parts", and "emphasize the drums to make it easier to grasp the rhythm"

2. Chord analysis function: Automatically analyze and display the chord progression of your favorite song to support performance

Automatically analyze and display chord progressions from music data

Synchronize with music playback and display chords in real time

It also shows how to hold down the guitar and keyboard, making it easy for beginners to play visually

3. Optimal playback UI for practice: Convenient and easy-to-use playback function, allowing you to efficiently practice playing along with the music

Playback speed change function: You can slow down the tempo and practice fine phrases.

Key change function: easy to transpose to a key that is easy to sing, easy to play

Efficient practice playback operation: one-touch head-to-head for chorus and solo parts, and easy-to-use A-B repeat function
