Xiaomi takes on IKEA with Mijia Vertical Study Lamp 2C and 384-LED dual light source design

Xiaomi has quietly listed its brand new Mijia Vertical Study Lamp 2C on JD.com, with preorders opening tomorrow at 10 AM Beijing time and a retail price of ¥1,199, or about $165 (€145).

The floor-standing form factor puts it in territory IKEA has long dominated with its own reading and work lamps, and the 2C leans further into that tall, freestanding design than its predecessor did.

The so-called "study lamp" is not the meager source of lighting affixed to the desk in your local university library, like Xiaomi's Bianco desk lamp available on Amazon for $69, but rather meant to loom over the desk as a powerful source of photons. Compared to the original vertical study lamp, the 2C brings a considerably longer lamp head, now stretching to 80 cm, which Xiaomi says noticeably widens the illuminated area versus the first generation.

The fixture uses a dual light source layout with an 8:3 brightness ratio between the upper and lower sections, peaking at 11,000 lumens, which Xiaomi claims is enough to illuminate a whole room up to 14 square meters. The lower light source adds a triple optical filtering structure with an individual lens for each LED, part of a 384-LED full spectrum array running at a warm 4000K color temperature.

Other carryovers and additions include a 24 GHz presence detection sensor for automatic on/off switching, a night light mode, and a touch control zone for quick adjustments. Needless to say, the lamp is compatible with the Mijia app for remote control and has cleared national and EU TÜV Rheinland certifications with no visible flicker, so it is ready to launch globally, too. At JD, it ships with three years of warranty, but it remains to be seen what will be its international availability and warranty, depending on the market.
