Windows 10 gains more Steam users, while Windows 11 dips below 46%
Windows 11 had just lost a good chunk of Steam users last month. As highlighted in Steam's latest survey report, the operating system is currently installed on the systems of 45.81% of all users, a 0.82% drop when compared to June 2024. Microsoft's last-gen Windows 10, however, saw a 0.74% growth, currently on 50.16% of all that were part of the survey.
This drop in Windows 11 users isn't surprising, as Statcounter shows that Microsoft Windows 10 has a comparably higher market share than the latest operating system. It currently holds 64.63% of the share, while Windows 11 has 30.88%. These reports indicate that a lot of users still prefer the last-gen OS despite Microsoft constantly updating the new version and bringing improvements.
Another interesting aspect of the Steam hardware survey is that Windows 7 and 8/8.1 still have a decent number of users. Valve has officially discontinued support for these operating systems, but they are still installed on the systems of a combined 0.49% of the users.
If you look at the bigger picture, a total of 96.55% of users have Windows installed, 1.37% have MacOS, and the other 2.08% are running Linux. Looking at the latter 2.08%, Arch Linux is the most popular, holding 0.17% of the users. Linux Mint 21.3 has 0.11%, while Ubuntu 22.04 is on the other 0.08% of systems.
The Steam survey also revealed the most popular GPUs, the amount of system RAM installed on most systems, and much more. You can learn about them by visiting the official survey page.
