Whoop fitness band gets reverse-engineered to stick it to subscription models

Whoop is among the companies that have gone all on in subscription models, going as far as tying their entire hardware experience to a subscription. So for those that didn't want to continue paying 200+ dollars a year after their subscriptions ran out, they were left with e-waste. Fortunately, Noop is here to change that.

The app pairs directly with the wearable over Bluetooth, capturing raw sensor data without sending a single byte to Whoop's servers. It calculates recovery scores, heart rate variability (HRV), daily strain, and sleep metrics locally, storing all biometric history in a self-contained SQLite database. For privacy-conscious users, Noop turns a closed corporate ecosystem into a transparent, offline health monitor.

However, sticking it to the subscription model comes with a few software and hardware caveats. On the technical side, Noop relies on community-developed approximations for recovery and strain. Users also lose access to Whoop's proprietary cloud analytics, coaching features, and official customer support. Furthermore, hardware support is strictly limited to Whoop 4.0 and 5.0 straps, leaving older device generations completely unsupported.

The biggest catch, though, is financial. Whoop does not sell standalone hardware as the strap is bundled into a mandatory 12-month membership contract costing over $200 upfront. Unless you acquire a used band, you are still locked into paying Whoop's initial contract fee just to get it in your hands. Noop won't save you from the initial buy-in cost, it offers an escape hatch from endless subscription renewals.
