VoiceOver in iOS 18 exposes passwords, leading to data security concerns
After a serious bug in iOS 18 recently cost iPhone users their chat histories, a new bug has now caused iPhones and iPads to read stored passwords aloud. This problem occurred in connection with the VoiceOver function, which serves as an operating aid for people with visual impairments. Several Apple devices were affected, including the iPhone XS and newer models as well as various iPads, such as the iPad Pro and the iPad Air.
The issue stems from a bug in the password app, which was introduced alongside several other new features in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. The app consolidates all saved passwords in one place, allowing users to manage their login credentials efficiently and securely.
Apple promptly addressed the bug by releasing the iOS 18.0.1 update on October 3, resolving the issue. In addition, another vulnerability that allowed audio recordings to be made without activating the microphone display on the new iPhone 16 models was also eliminated.
On Reddit, users are debating whether it's worth updating to iOS 18 now or if it’s wiser to wait for the initial updates, given the high potential for bugs. While software errors after the launch of a major firmware update are part and parcel for many Redditors, others tend to postpone the update.
