Garmin asserts that the Messenger Plus is not the average inReach standalone satellite communicator. It is the first of its line to support photo- and voice note-sending in the complete absence of conventional cellular service. The new accessory is also capable of two-way texts, regular location updates and SOS features.

The launch of a new addition to the inReach line might seem a little redundant in light of the fact that its maker Garmin has become involved in the provision of satellite services to Android phones. However, the Messenger Plus might still have the edge for some time to come with an upgrade to series-first non-text messages without the need for mobile data or Wi-Fi.

In addition, the Messenger Plus has IPX7-rated waterproofing, not to mention its own battery estimated to last up to 600 hours between charges, even if the user has it set to share its location every 10 minutes.

Then again, it still needs a paired smartphone to send its new voice or photo texts via the OEM's app. However, it can then send them directly to Garmin Response (a "24/7-staffed international emergency assistance coordination center") if necessary as well as a user's contacts. The messages can also be sent with embedded GPS co-ordinates.

Ultimately, it is of course a source of independent satellite connectivity - although that function requires a monthly subscription with charges that start at $14.99.

The inReach Messenger Plus communicator itself also has an RRP of $499.99 on garmin.com from now, whereas its Mini 2 predecessor is currently $359.79 on Amazon.
